Psilocybe stuntzii, affectionately known as Stuntz’s Blue Legs or Blue Ringers. This is a psilocybin-containing mushroom named in honor of mycologist Daniel Stuntz from the University of Washington. First identified on the university’s campus, this species is a member of the Hymenogastraceae family. Notable for its distinctive blue-staining characteristics upon handling or with age.


Morphology & Key Features

  • Cap (Pileus): Measures 1–4 cm in diameter. Starting conical and becoming convex or broadly umbonate with age. The cap surface is smooth, slightly sticky when moist, and ranges in color from olive-brown to chestnut-brown. The cap usually fading to yellowish tones when dry. The margin is striated when moist and may develop a greenish tint.

  • Gills: Gills are adnate to adnexed, closely spaced, and moderately broad. They transition from yellowish-brown in youth to violet-brown or chocolate-brown as they mature. 

  • Stipe (Stem): The 2–7.5 cm long and 1.5–6 mm thick stem is typically yellowish to brown. Often developing bluish bruising, particularly below its fragile, membranous ring.

  • Spore Print: Produces a dark purple-brown spore print, with elliptical, smooth spores measuring 8–12 x 6–8 micrometers.


Ecology & Habitat

  • Geographic Distribution: Found predominantly along the Pacific Coast, especially in the Pacific Northwest.

  • Habitat: Prefers well-mulched, newly planted lawns, as well as wood chips and landscaped areas. It thrives in coniferous wood-chip mulch and is most frequently observed from September to December.
