According to the firsthand recollections of Basidium Equilibrium’s founder, PE7 became known within the community around 2019 through the work of a mycologist named Joshua, whom he knew personally.

Much of the history surrounding lesser-known mushroom varieties was shared through collector networks, online forums, and direct communication rather than formal publications. Preserving these accounts helps recognize the individuals and communities who contributed to the development and documentation of these varieties.

PE7 Variety Characteristics

PE7 belongs to the broader Penis Envy family, a group of P. cubensis varieties known for their distinctive mushroom morphology.

Descriptions of PE7 commonly note:

• Cap coloration: Warm brown, chestnut, and darker brown tones.
• Morphology: Rounded caps and compact structural features associated with the Penis Envy family.
• Spore coloration: Dark purplish-brown, characteristic of pigmented P. cubensis spores.
• Spore release: Limited natural spore deposition, making collected spore swabs a useful specimen format.

Individual specimens may exhibit natural variation.

Microscopy and Taxonomy

Like other pigmented Psilocybe cubensis varieties, PE7 produces basidiospores that can be examined for characteristics including color, shape, and surface structure.

Under magnification, P. cubensis spores are generally ellipsoid to subellipsoid and possess a defined spore wall. These microscopic features are useful for studying the species, although spores alone cannot reliably distinguish PE7 from every other P. cubensis variety.
