African Transkei represents a rare Psilocybe cubensis spore lineage originally linked to the Transkei region of South Africa. First reported in the 1980s, this variety has remained an intriguing and somewhat elusive specimen within the mycological community.

• Origin & Background – Connected to the former Republic of Transkei in southeastern South Africa (1976–1994), this variety entered North America in the mid-1980s. Its rarity and unique history make it a valued addition to microscopy collections.

• Morphological Notes (Microscopy Focus) – Displays light pigmentation and standard cubensis features. Gill structures are medium to broad with varied formation, providing ample detail under magnification.

• Microscopic Features – Produces purple spores averaging 7 × 12 micrometers. Spores are typically abundant, making this lineage especially suitable for slide preparation and study.

• Research & Collectibility – African Transkei remains less common among enthusiasts, contributing to its value as a collectible spore variety for research archives and genetic documentation.
